Maria Petschnig’s performance Family Begutz explores notions of fantasy through a complex set of personal images and cultural associations. Hidden behind a curtain, Petschnig enacts different scenarios and gestures that are presented via a camera and projector to the audience in the adjacent gallery. By juxtaposing intimate and found photographs with actions that persistently shift between the sensual and the grotesque, Petschnig questions and blurs distinctions between public and private.
